OpenHydro was formed in 2005 following the negotiation of world rights to the Open-Centre technology in 2004. Since 2006, the Open-Centre Turbine design has been tested at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Scotland.
OpenHydro has achieved a number of industry firsts, including being the first to deploy a tidal turbine at the EMEC, the first to generate electricity from tidal streams onto the UK National Grid and the first to successfully demonstrate a method of safely and economically deploying and recovering turbines on the seabed. The deployment and recovery method delivers a step change in the economics of tidal energy.
In 2014, OpenHydro Canada was established to deliver projects in the company’s Canadian portfolio and to drive the development in that market. In 2015, OpenHydro France was established with the same goals in mind for the French market, with OpenHydro Technology Japan following in 2016.
The company currently employs 142 people, with the majority located at the two facilities in Ireland. OpenHydro is ISO:9001 accredited, is certified with Bureau Veritas and DNV-GL, and is a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited company with the governing body of the engineering profession, Engineers Ireland.
